Just a Simple Decision
Yesterday, while cleaning up my closet, I came across a dried flower that I had been keeping for years. Someone had given it to me on a trip, and back then, it felt meaningful, so I decided to hold onto it. I kept it carefully in a pink box, along with a rose from my high school graduation and some other small papers. Over the years, I would open the box every now and then, seeing that flower and thinking, “I’ll keep it for memories.”
But yesterday, I looked at it and realized that it no longer needed to be there. I decided to throw it away, and I even burned the trash afterward. I don’t feel emotional closure, and I don’t feel lighter or heavier. I just feel normal. It was simply a choice I made, a small act of letting go.
It’s funny how objects can hold memories for us, even when those memories are no longer active in our daily lives. Keeping the rose and some papers still feels meaningful, but this flower had served its purpose. And that’s okay, sometimes letting go is just a practical decision, and that’s enough.
Have you ever had something you held onto for years, just because of the memories it carried, and then realized it was time to let it go?
